In February 2011, Jaime Sharp and Dave Briggs will team up for the "Kayak Down Under NZ" Expedition, an attempt to Kayak the length of New Zealand. The trip is expected to take over 4 months and will start from the northern tip of the North Island, continuing along the east coast, some 1474 Nautical Miles (2729 Kilometers, 1697 miles) to the southern tip of the southernmost island, Stewart Island. This trip will travel through diverse environments, from the Sub Tropical north of NZ to the Sub Antarctic south, and ever present will be the harsh sun, that burns even on a cloudy day in New Zealand. Jaime was born and raised in NZ and studied at AUT Auckland for a Diploma in Outdoor Recreation Leadership. Shortly after finishing, he headed overseas to realize his dream of a life full of adventure. After being gone 7 years, working and living in various parts of the world as an adventure guide, he returns to NZ to rediscover his roots and pay homage to the beautiful land of adventure and smiling faces that he could never forget. “When I left I said to myself - I will return in some years and see my homeland in a new way, I am now going to do just that”, says Jaime. “This trip is about New Zealand, the country, the people, the outdoors. After my years of traveling the world, from Africa, Europe, Asia and living many years all over the Americas, I am reinforced in my view that NZ is a unique and magical land that I am privileged to call my homeland. I hope to be able to share these upcoming adventures; not only with fellow Kiwi’s, but with the world I have come to know.” During stints working in the jungles and Coral reefs of Belize, Jaime met Dave, who also shares the same passions and desires of adventure. Dave jumped on the chance to paddle the length of NZ and discover its beauty first hand. “I am looking forward to discovering New Zealand in a very unique and intimate way. NZ appears to be a land of harsh beauty and I hope we are worthy to earn the treasures waiting for us on this adventure”, says Dave. The trip will be a self supported trip as much as possible without detracting from the cultural experience of the country (in other words, they will have no support team following, but will take external help that is spontaneous or normally available).
