"The Outdoor Industries Women's Coalition (OIWC) made major strides in 2011, converting to a 501c3 (so donations are now tax-deductible) and with that we launched an aggressive advocacy program aimed at reaching a new vision of 'Respect, Inclusion and Gender Equality at all levels in the workplace." To fund the new Advocacy Program, we are launching our first-ever holiday fund drive - and your participation is important!
For 15 years, OIWC has been THE place for women in the outdoor industries to connect with other women and develop their careers through networking and recognition programs. In recent years, OIWC has grown exponentially, tripling its membership, expanding into the bike and snowsports industries, adding educational events at trade shows and in six regions around the country, and developing a sophisticated and active online community for women in the industry. OIWC has become the go-to organization offering education and professional development resources to women, helping diversify the industry from the ground up.
In 2011, our members – 1,500 employees and 82 corporate members in the outdoor, snow and bike industry - told us that they want OIWC to take the next step and to advocate for women’s issues and help create an industry with more women at top-level positions, getting equal pay for equal work. Our Board of Directors listened and OIWC is moving into a strong advocacy role beginning in 2012.
We have a plan in place. Now we need to raise the seed money to take us through the first step of the plan: getting a comprehensive understanding of the issues in our industries. Our first step is to gather and analyze the data, uncovering the truths around gender inequity in the workplace. Once we have the stats and can clearly see what problems exist, we will be positioned to develop programs and resources for the outdoor industries, making our industries a leader in gender equality across the nation.
We cannot accomplish this goal alone – we need the help and support of our individual members and supporters. Please give generously today. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated. You can donate online any time!" - Sally Grimes, OIWC Executive Director
